Old Usui Pass Railroad Infrastructure

Usui Pass Railroad Facility

Built in 1893, the old Usui Line which ran between Yokokawa and Karuizawa adopted the Swiss Abt Rack Rail system to overcome the mountain's steep gradient of 66.7 ‰. Almost all of the bridges, tunnels and other facilities were constructed with bricks under the instruction of British engineers.
