Although the term “Kakaa Denka (a family whose wife holds a stronger position than her husband)” evokes an image of a “strong woman”, it basically refers to “a hard-working woman who supports her household”.
In Joshu (present-day Gunma Prefecture), where the silk industry had been flourishing from times long past, women played a large role in supporting their households through sericulture, silk reeling and weaving. Their husbands praised their wives as “the best Kakaa (wife) in the world!” This expression became famous as a representation of the Joshu spirit and is now also used to describe women who are actively working.
